The Brownsburg Police Department has received reports from residents that have received unordered packages containing a white and/ or blue powdery substance. These packages are part of an identified scam. At this time there is no indication that the substance is harmful. With that in mind, we ask you to please be cautious if you come in contact with any suspicious package and contact your local police department to make a report.
Due to several inquiries, we are updating you with more information regarding this scam. The mailings/packages may be part of a "brushing" scam, where sellers ship packages to businesses or a person's home that was never ordered. The seller then uses that transaction to write a positive, but made‐up review. The ultimate motivation is to get a good review for the product on online vendor sites, and the more positive reviews you get, the more likely you are to get sales of that product.
USPIS have tested the powder and it is non-hazardous. All of the info regarding the scam is on the website USPIS.gov
in written form and on a video. There are specific instructions on the video on what steps to take if you get the package and what to do and how to contact USPIS.
